September Harvest

9 Sep

This month so many wonderful crops are in season.  Tomorrow Hungry Toad Organic Farm will have lettuce, peppers, beans, onions, eggplant, potatoes, watermelons and our friends at Mile Creek Organic Farm will have sweet peppers, tomatoes, paste tomatoes, summer squash, okra and wonderful garlic, flowers. I don’t want to miss out on anything so I plan shop first thing in the morning and then go back to see what is left at the end of the day.  In September and October I really look forward to our spectacular Ohio apples. Downing Fruit Farm will have peaches, gala apples, McIntosh apples and their award wining fresh cider!

At The Chef Case we will still be featuring Mile Creek Pattypan Squash and, as always, Hungry Toad Farm Eggs! This may be the last Saturday for the wildly successful Organic Farmer’s Breakfast: Egg & Cheese Panini with Organic Pesto. Truly the one thing I really miss all winter is fresh local basil! Chef wanted me to let you know that he will be bringing back his cheese blintzes tomorrow. If you love a blintz be sure to take a look early. See you at the Market! -Chef Wife

Exclusive Movie Screening & Local Farm Tour

31 Aug

This Saturday one of Dayton best loved Family Farms is hosting their Farm Fest 2011!  Don’t miss this rare opportunity to tour E.A.T. Food For Life Farm and meet Farmer Dan’s Family. In addition to the tours and a potluck supper you will have an exclusive opportunity to screen an important new movie Farmageddon. This is the only screening of the documentary about the escalating fight for food rights currently scheduled in the Miami Valley.

The Festival begins at 4:00 pm this Saturday September 3rd, 2011 and the tours start at 5:00pm. Guests will have a choice of touring the Farm or the Dairy! Everyone is invited to bring a dish to share. Tableware is provided and a selection of grilled local, organic meat will be available for sale. The potluck supper begins at 6:00pm followed by the movie screening at 7:00pm. Farmageddon will be shown in E.A.T. Food For Life’s Barn Theater! After the movie people with questions can remain for a panel discussion and question/answer session. This is a unique opportunity to learn more about family farms that were providing safe, healthy foods to their communities and were forced to stop. Understanding what is at stake is of interest to all who support farms like E.A.T. Food For Life and enjoy access to nutrient dense foods they provide.

The Pattypan Invasion

25 Aug

Pattypan squash is in full season in Ohio. This wonderful, unique squash is most tender when picked early while it is about 2 inches in diameter. It can be cooked whole and makes an amazingly dramatic presentation this way. When they are a bit larger, they can be scooped out and stuffed or pan fried. Pattypan is a great source of vitamins A and C and because of their fun shape, even finicky kids are often tempted to try them.  Our Daughter is wild about Pattypan squash, she loves the flavor and she thinks they look like little magical flying saucers.

This week be sure to stop by The Chef Case to see what Joe creates with the Pattypans from our Mile Creek CSA. Of course tomatoes are in full swing so look for the heirlooms in our organic deli salads this week. Don’t miss the all producer grown farmers market this Saturday outside the 2nd Street Market and pick up some Pattypan squash to try out yourself, Joe is always happy to give you some cooking tips! -Chef Wife

Bring on the Tomatoes!

5 Aug

Stop by the 2nd Street Market this Saturday to stock up on all the local Beans, zucchini, squash and scoop up the last of the Blackberries and Blueberries. Our dear friends from Mile Creek Organic Farm tell us they will have: peppers, tomatoes, basil, scallions, kale, garlic, cucumbers, zucchini, and or course their lovely flowers! Cantaloupe starts to come into season in August along with our awesome Ohio corn!  These months are the Miami Valley’s local food showcase months and the best way to enjoy that bounty is to buy directly from an area farmer. As more and more comes into season, The Chef Case will feature local, organic produce in more and more of our prepared foods.  Look for Joe’s signature artisan gazpacho to knock your socks off!

I usually wait till the end of the day Saturdays and purchase what the Farmers were not able to sell but, this week I will be first in line for the glorious summer tomatoes! See you at the Market -Chef Wife
